Zultanite Jewelry Care — Frequently Asked Questions
Zultanite jewelry requires gentler handling than harder gems. Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store separately from harder gems. Avoid daily-wear ring settings; pendants and earrings are safer mountings. Insure the piece for replacement value at current per-carat reference figures.
Can I wear Zultanite every day?
Daily wear is risky for Zultanite due to its 6.5–7 Mohs hardness combined with perfect {010} cleavage. The gem will eventually accumulate scratches from quartz dust (5–7 Mohs) and is vulnerable to point impacts that can propagate cleavage. Pendants, earrings, and brooches are safer than rings or bracelets. If you want a daily-wear Zultanite ring, choose a bezel setting with substantial protective metal around the stone.
How do I clean Zultanite jewelry?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Rinse and dry with a soft microfiber cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners — vibrations can propagate the cleavage plane. Never use steam — thermal shock risks fracturing. Avoid acidic or solvent-based jewelry cleaners; they can dull the polish.
Can I wear Zultanite in the shower?
Brief contact with warm water and mild soap is fine. Avoid prolonged exposure to hot water (thermal shock), chlorinated pools (surface dulling), and hot tubs. Remove the piece before swimming, exercising, or any activity that could cause point impacts.
How do I store Zultanite?
In a soft-lined compartment, separate from harder gems (sapphire, diamond, topaz, spinel) which can scratch the surface, and separate from softer gems (opal, pearl, tanzanite) which Zultanite can scratch. Wrap each piece in a soft pouch if storing multiple pieces in one box. Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent dehydration of the OH structure over decades.
Should I insure Zultanite jewelry?
Yes, for any piece valued above the deductible of your homeowner's or renter's policy. Use a specialty jewelry-insurance carrier (Jewelers Mutual, Chubb, BriteCo) than relying on a standard policy, which typically caps gem coverage at $1,000–$2,500. Insure for replacement value based on current per-carat reference figures, not original purchase price.
What if my Zultanite chips or cleaves?
Take it to a master gemological cutter, not a chain repair counter. Cleavage damage on diaspore can sometimes be repaired by re-cutting at a slightly smaller size, preserving most of the original carat weight. Photograph the damage immediately for insurance. Do not attempt to clean the stone before assessment — small fragments may still be intact.
Can Zultanite be re-polished?
Yes, but only by a cutter experienced with cleavage-aware lapidary on diaspore. Standard re-polishing techniques used on harder gems can propagate the {010} cleavage. Expect to lose 5–10% of carat weight in a competent re-polish.
